Charlie Baker, Head Of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, Talks Health Reform & The Cost Conundrum

last modified Aug 11, 2008 05:54 PM

The CEO of a major non-profit health plan views rising health costs as the major barrier to improving access.

Late last month, the head of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, a non-profit insurance company, wrote a hotly debated post on the popular blog The Health Care Blog.  His topic: why we must focus on affordability if we are ever going to be able to greatly expand access to care.  He writes that “somehow we’ve divorced the coverage/affordability question from the cost question and we pay for it – everyday.”

Baker’s post has ignited a lot of conversation and is currently one of the top posts on the Health Care blog.  Many members of the ChangeNow4Health community have suggested solutions to the nation’s health cost crisis – especially for the individual health consumer.  Given this, I encourage you to visit the Health Care Blog and take part in the ongoing conversation about this issue.  Currently, much of the dialogue is focused on the roots of the health cost crisis.  What’s needed is more emphasis on solutions.
