Health Incentives

by Ingrid - Heart Patient last modified Apr 24, 2008 08:52 PM

Reward insurance companies and companies, who develop wellness programs and who support employee's good choices like diet programs and physical fittness programs.

I had a pacemaker/defibulator put in, but though overweight, and at risk, I don't qualify for our hospital's excellent cardiac rehab program. My insurance company paid $79000. for my surgery, but won't pay $300. for a gym membership. Our state welfare system, pays for clients to attend weight watchers for three months, recognizing that poor health is a barrier to good health and employemnt. Unfortunately, my company and my insurance company arent' that evolved.

While this is more of a comment focusing on the need for additional preventive and rehabilitative health services, it is worth including in the ideas section of this Website.

Everyone, what are your thoughts on the need for more preventive services? What are some ideas to encourage more insurance companies to include this benefit? What are innovative managed care companies currently doing in this area?

If the government would start doing more preventive measures, maybe the private sector would follow suit. Medicare does a Welcome to Medicare physical but that was a big battle... CBO and OMB scoring was a big hurdle. They score very litte related to preventive care as a savings to the government. THis is a significant issue in reform. The perverse thinking-- people live longer... that's just longer they are on Medicare and therefore more money to pay for their healthcare. Without some sort of cost/benefit interpretation, it's hard to push through reforms related to prevention. The scoring system needs fundamental reform.
